Reiki (pronounced RAY- KEY), is a Japanese healing practice that is older than the written word. Trying to describe Reiki is like trying to describe love, but the fact is, we live in a world of unseen forces. On a daily basis, we interact with things we cannot see: radio waves, ultraviolet rays, sound waves and even microscopic bacteria. Science has taught us that energy is in everything, down to the very matter that composes our bodies and that it cannot be created or destroyed. Instead, energy moves from one thing to another, from one being to another.

Reiki is a form of gentle energy transmission administered through the hands of a practitioner and shared by softly touching the client’s body or by holding the hands just above the body in a series of hand positions. It is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one’s "life force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress. And if it is high, then we are more capable of feeling happy and healthy. The more freely your energy moves, the more joy you experience. We are an energy system. Researchers have proven that we embody an energy component. Energy exists within each cell and between each cell of our subtle matter. As a matter of physics, everything is energy.

A Reiki treatment feels like a warm radiance coming through the practitioner’s hands that flows through you and around you. Clients often report that they feel a tingling sensation. Sometimes they describe the sensation feels like their body consists of a series of bricks that are being restacked. It is also very normal to hear people say they feel energy or warmth coming out of their feet or their heads when hand positions may be working on another area entirely. RAY means SPIRIT or DIVINE, and KEY means LIFE FORCE ENERGY. Reiki is pure unconditional love. Reiki is intelligent energy. To receive its benefit all that is necessary is to be willing to receive.

In today’s world people get energetically depleted and unbalanced. Being depleted and unbalanced leads to illness. A Reiki practitioner restores lost energy, allowing for balance. Reiki can even reverse ailments and injuries. Scientific studies have proven time and time again that emotions like stress, anger, and depression affect our bodies.

At hospitals across the country, you can now find pamphlets on articles titled Forgiveness or Letting Go of Grudges and Bitterness or Meditation: A Simple, Fast Way to Reduce Stress. This in an effort to raise awareness about the effects of negative emotions on our health and how to remedy them. Stress in all capacities can cause headaches, chest pain, back pain, decreased immune system, high blood pressure and even heart disease.

Many sicknesses and injuries originate in the realms that most doctors and scientists don’t inhabit. Painful emotions are often the creation point of illness. Reiki treats the whole person, including body, emotions, mind, and spirit, with many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace and security. This allows us to begin to let go of painful emotions and stress. Studies show patients benefited from Reiki through reduced stress and anxiety, reduction of pain medication and faster recovery, along with fewer side effects and improved sleep.
